The Classical Studies program is committed to its traditional core fields of historical, art historical, archaeological, and literary research while extending its range into the study of ancient thought broadly conceived: ancient philosophy, historiography, medicine, religion, and the later reception of ancient ideas. Its faculty, housed in a variety of departments, continue to strengthen the program's interdepartmental approach.
Each student follows a carefully-designed program in three major fields of classical studies, leading to a concentration on topics of research that involve more than one field of study. Together with the Center for the Ancient Mediterranean, the Classical Studies program is the home of a vibrant research community that provides broad and coherent training in classical studies.
The M.A. program is intended both for students who are seeking a free-standing M.A. in Classical Studies, and for students interested in receiving further training before applying to Ph. D. programs.
