Imperial College London

Course Overview

The rate at which newly approved drugs hit the market continues to decline rapidly against a backdrop of ever-increasing demand for better therapeutics against cancer, antibiotic resistant infection, developing world and orphan disease, and neurodegenerative and inflammatory disease, to name but a few. There is currently no consensus within the pharmaceutical industry on how this trend can be reversed, and there is a clear opportunity for academia to innovate in new approaches to drug discovery.

This MRes course aims to provide students with a deep understanding of the current global state of drug discovery together with radical insights from leaders in the field as to how it may develop in the future. Students will graduate from the course with a solid knowledge of the drug discovery process from emerging technologies and drug target selection through to clinical trials and regulatory aspects. They will also be challenged to develop their own ideas on how to focus academic and industrial research to meet the pressing challenges of drug discovery.

The course builds on the highly successful model of the Department's existing MRes courses in Chemical Biology, run within the Institute of Chemical Biology, and involves both taught and research project elements. At its conclusion students will be ideally placed to undertake PhD studies in collaborative multidisciplinary drug discovery or to apply their knowledge in industry.

Applicants are rigorously assessed to ensure they are able to meet the demands of the course, with an emphasis on promotion of equality and diversity within the programme. In all these aspects the course exemplifies the College-s strategic intent to meet the needs of society and industry by harnessing its multidisciplinary strengths, and to attract the top tier of students worldwide.

Students follow taught courses in drug discovery and in transferable skills subjects such as safety awareness, intellectual property management, time and project management and presentation and communication skills. They write a literature report on their research project as well as a Synoptic Case Study assessment, this takes the form of an essay that encompasses aspects of the taught elements of the course, and is based on an unsolved problem. Finally, students undertake an individual research project throughout the course and submit a research manuscript.
