Course Overview
EU law is a complex and fascinating subject that has an ever-increasing impact upon policymaking in the UK, Europe and internationally. As the world-s largest economy and a trading partner to 80 countries, the European Union holds a powerful position within the global political, legal and economic landscape, which is why in-depth knowledge of European law is vital to any legal career. A prestigious LLM in European Law, from The University of Edinburgh, one of the world-s top 20 universities, would therefore be a significant asset to anyone who is setting their sights on a rewarding career in law, business, politics or policy within the EU, or beyond. What will I study? You-ll be exposed to a broad range of perspectives on EU law and practice. We have fantastic links with legal practitioners and policymakers who are working at the highest levels of the development of EU law, so you will benefit from first-hand knowledge of what is happening in the field right now. At Edinburgh, we take an interdisciplinary approach. You-ll combine study of the law and legal systems of the EU with courses on both policy implications and applied economics. We also have links with courses offered by academics in the School of Social and Political Science. Why Edinburgh? Edinburgh Law School has been specialising in this field for more than 45 years. In 1968, we established the UK-s first research centres dedicated to European legal affairs. And of course, our position in the city of Edinburgh, a legal capital within a mixed legal system, provides a unique context from within which to sharpen your knowledge and develop your analysis of critical legal issues. Who is it for? The LLM in European Law is not only for law graduates who plan to develop a career in the field of EU law, but also for law students or practising lawyers looking to gain a competitive edge in the employment market more generally within law, business or policymaking. However, it-s no coincidence that many of our graduates develop dynamic careers in Brussels, and Edinburgh Law School has in fact a thriving alumni community based in the Belgian capital and home of the European Commission. If you-re interested in developing research in the field of EU law then this programme would be an essential stepping stone and you would be very well supported at Edinburgh to pursue this path.
