Course Overview

Faculty members in HDE are engaged in teaching and research in a variety of developmental domains. Much of our work focuses on children's social and cultural cognition, moral judgment, language, literacy, psychosocial development, and acquisition of mathematical and scientific concepts. Faculty members are interested in exploring these issues within early childhood education settings, schools, and families. We are particularly interested in understanding processes of learning and development of children and adolescents from a wide array of backgrounds and ability levels, both within and outside the United States. As a department we are also committed to supporting effective teaching and parenting practices. For instance, a number of our faculty members develop and evaluate teacher preparation programs at the pre-service and in-service levels. The majority of our graduates become faculty members in colleges and universities. Others hold positions in contract research firms or government agencies related to child welfare and education at the local, state or national level. Still others work with local educational authorities and social service agencies.
