Course Overview

Dramatic Writing students collaborate on productions of their stage and television scripts. They have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses and to participate in the Sloan/CMU Screenplay Competition, which awards $35, 000 in prizes to current students each year. Both during and after their time at CMU, writers have access to an established framework of professional connections.

The program is lead by Rob Handel, an alumnus of New Dramatists and 13P. Recent productions of his plays and opera libretti include the Prototype Festival at HERE, New York Stage and Film, Long Wharf, Target Margin, Rorschach Theatre (DC) , Just Theater/Shotgun Players (Berkeley) , Theatre Battery (Kent, WA) , and Theatre Vertigo (Portland, OR). He has been playwright in residence at the Royal Court, Don, mar Warehouse, O'Neill Playwrights Conference, Soho Rep, Portland Center Stage, and in The Civilians R&D Group. He serves on the board of the MacDowell Colony. Visiting faculty have included Sheila Callaghan, Kia Corthron, Erin Courtney, Kristoffer Diaz, Madeleine George, Lucas Hnath, Aurorae Khoo, Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, Richard Nelson, JT Rogers, Andrea Thome, Francine Volpe, Anne Washburn, and Mac Wellman.
