Course Overview

This Primary Dental Care Masters degree programme at The University of Edinburgh gives you the chance to improve the care your provide at your practice by developing your clinical practice skills, while interacting with colleagues from all over the world. The qualification you obtain will help to differentiate you from other general dentists and signal to the world that you are a forward thinking and highly motivated general dentist. We offer a wide variety of course choices in both adult and the child and adolescent dentistry care. This programme is part-time and very flexible, allowing you to exit with a Certificate, a Diploma or a Masters, depending on your needs and availability. By choosing sufficient credits in second and third year you can exit with an MSc in Primary Dental Care (paediatric dentistry). Although the design is asynchronous to facilitate participation from different time zones, the timetable progresses in real time. There is a summer break and a winter break but otherwise participation is expected throughout the academic year. This degree is part-time but please don't underestimate the time commitment. Students should expect to require 10 - 15 hours per week to fully participate. This includes time in your clinic recording cases and study time. Learning Outcomes Reflect critically on the relationships between theory and practice. To develop an evidence-based approach to clinical practice. To develop an understanding of how to assess the quality of primary dental care. To be able to provide the highest quality of primary dental care. To establish principles that promote self-criticism and monitoring. To contribute to professional development at both a personal and local level. To have an understanding of the relevant literature and of the methods for its assessment. To gather relevant data through the application of appropriate methods of enquiry, Conjoint award with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh(RCSEd) Students who complete the full three year MSc in Primary Dental care will be eligible to be elected for Membership in Primary Dental Care (MPDC) at the RCSEd without further examination.
