The planet Earth is a physical system, composed of a series of layers – such as the lithosphere (rocks), the pedosphere (soils), the biosphere (living things), the hydrosphere (water), and the atmosphere (air and weather). These layers each have distinctive properties, that mutually effect one another. A variety of related disciplines to study these effects, either dealing with a particular aspect of the earth system (such as the Earth Sciences), or with an applied use of the Earth Sciences (such as Agriculture). The agricultural, environmental, and earth sciences provide preparation for a wide variety of different careers - from as farming and ecology, to mining and resource extraction, from weather forecasting, to animal welfare – depending upon your chosen specialism.
