Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering deals with the creation, maintenance and study of machines. It is the oldest and broadest of the Engineering disciplines, and works with such diverse physical systems as Aircraft, Rockets, Vacuums, Engines, and Compressors. Mechanical Engineers use Physical equations to model how these systems work, predicting their behaviour under different conditions and producing improvements. Because of the breadth of Mechanical Engineering, a Masters (MSc or MEng) in this subject opens up a wide range of different career pathways. Manufacturing is a particularly common destination, with mechanical engineers working in the production of aerospace products, weapons, cars, ships, domestic appliances, hydraulics, and industrial automation devices. For those students who decide to work outside of Engineering, options where Mathematical skills and practical understanding are particularly sought-after – such as Finance and Logistics – are particularly popular.
